The Benson Letter - July 2022

The Benson Letter
July 2022

It's July and very much at this time a repeat of the weather of 2020. Instead of writing what has already been written, let's look back to our past Benson Letters. I also want to do two fun things in this month’s newsletter. I'll introduce you to a businessman I recently met and an unexpected Mountaineer cheerleader with wings.

Blast from the Past

If you have a question about why your lawn is brown or weedy, please refer to the Benson Letter from June 2020. If you want to know about the only thing you can do to protect yourself from the summer 90-degree heat, please read the Mowing Basics Wisdom.

Mowing shorter than 3.5 inches still stands as the hardest thing for us to learn. Treat every living thing in the way it's created for and there is very little need for pestilence. The magic lesson: plant the right plant in the right place and most of the cures become unnecessary. Grass, only on a golf course where it's a different type of grass plant do they mow short. Please read the Mowing Basics Wisdom.

Don't be Coi, get Koi

Let's meet a most excellent young businessman who I had the blessing of encountering in one of my lawns this March. He is Matt Luther who owns Luther’s Landscaping.

I watch Morgantown very closely, both for clients who would benefit from the services of such excellence such as Luther's Landscaping as well as other services I can add to my BNI team for even additional benefit. It's beyond me how I only came to meet Matt recently?

First understand that Matt studied Aquaculture here at our own WVU. He switched his major at the last moment to Wildlife and Fisheries Resource Management. He did his internship with a local business, Just Add Water, back in 2011. When Just Add Water closed, he started servicing those clients and adding others. Having a ready clientele, he didn’t need to advertise. That may be why it took seven years for me to discover him in my own town.

What does Luther's Landscaping do? They build and maintain new koi ponds and rehab old ones. This isn’t a mechanical skill for Matt, his work is based on building natural systems and biologically balancing their ponds. Aquaculture speaks of the natural systems of all those bugs as I say, the good bacteria, the bad, and all the counter funguses that exist in a koi pond. That’s how we have always grown grass too. No wonder I am excited to introduce him to you.

Have a pond? Thinking about investing in a koi pond? Matt Luther is who you need to call. Thank you, Matt, for the blessing of your time and allowing me to share you with my clients.

Bogie

Diane and I have wanted to do this for years so this is a great time to introduce Bogie. Bogie is a yellow naped Amazon parrot that belongs to Richard and Linda Kerr. Probably 12 years ago I was working in the back lawn listening to what your about to hear and knocked on the door to be introduced.

Bogie is now 27 years old and, when not singing, loves to eat what probably isn’t good for him, just like us. He particularly like pizza and spaghetti but can handle good shrimp and a variety of fruits and vegetables. His main food is commercial parrot food but it's the treats he lives for, just like us. If you live south of Pitt this video must thrill your heart. Let's end July with a smile and a thrill as Bogie salutes the Mountaineers. Thank you, Richard and Linda, for sharing your special pet.

There's a corner on the website that features the many pets that are a blessing to Jay's clients. Jay's wife, Diane, loves pets so much that she becomes their dogmother.

For most of our pest treatments we can start any time a crisis comes up, no matter the time of year. In this case, though, the snow covering on the ground makes this a not-great time to address ticks. Let’s look forward to spring instead and get serious about addressing the problem as early as we can.
