The Benson Letter - March 2022

The Benson Letter
March 2022

First, I apologize to all who have spring allergies; my joy is your pain. By now, you would have smelled that first cut of spring grass. Of all the aromas I have been gifted to sample, there is nothing like the first couple times in spring I smell freshly cut grass. Please stop with me and enjoy the moment. Diane's pet is a little girl by the name of Maggy hosted by a favorite client, David Watkins. She's just too cute!

To Aerate or Not to Aerate

I take numerous calls about aeration because some golf courses do it and in other parts of the country it can be an aid in breaking down soil compaction. Is aeration necessary in Morgantown? I talk about aeration and why it's not a valuable service. Learn more from my latest Wisdom "To Aerate or Not to Aerate."

Does your lawn look like this now? If so, it's not some super, secret disease, or a winter bug. No, this is called your dogs present to you after peeing on our precious lawn all winter. We love our kids but they can cause some damage other than the mud like burning your lawn.

Best thing to do here is take a shovel and poke it up and down on the edge, slicing through the thatch area. Then throw down some seed that matches your lawn and poke it some more with the shovel. Normally this will recover in about 3 weeks if you have moved the dog to pee in a better location. Actually, they often do that themselves because they would rather pee on better turf and for a while it was too cold to be picky.

Out, Out, Brown Spot

Now, The Fun Part, Maggy

This is Maggy and her dad heading out to work. They have been helping another long-time client David’s Mom, Wanda move to Heritage. While moving is really tough on us humans it's just excitement and fun for Maggy. She's only too happy to help and sometimes maybe just a little too much.

Maggy is a Maltese/Bichon Frise mix close to 10 months old. If you look closely in the second photo you will see where the IV was placed when she was recently fixed. If you remember the old newsletter with Diane's Maltese Frodo you will definitely see the resemblance and why I knew Maggy would get picked.

I believe Maggy's purpose is to help her dad not get bored with the extra time on his hands now that he is retired. I look forward to seeing what she has planned for his summer. Thanks to the Watkins for allowing us to enjoy their little girl. Spring is better with shared with a friend and Maggy found one for sure.

There's a corner on the website that features the many pets that are a blessing to Jay's clients. Jay's wife, Diane, loves pets so much that she becomes their dogmother.

For most of our pest treatments we can start any time a crisis comes up, no matter the time of year. In this case, though, the snow covering on the ground makes this a not-great time to address ticks. Let’s look forward to spring instead and get serious about addressing the problem as early as we can.
